Trademark Guidelines

The university's trademarks are intended to present a positive image of GW and may not be altered in any way. GW has registered the trademarks that are shown on the Approved Logo Sheet (PDF) with the United States Patent and Trademarks Office. GW requires all individuals, groups, departments and organizations to submit their artwork for approval before using the trademarks for merchandise.

Using the University Seal on Merchandise:

The University Seal is reserved for Restricted Use only. Request permission to use the University Seal from the Licensing and Trademarks Program at [email protected].

Athletics Marks:

The GW Primary Athletics Marks, #'s 25–30 as indicated on page 3 of the Approved Logo Sheet (PDF), must be used as a primary logo when advertising any of the university's athletic teams or programs.

The Tertiary Athletics Mark with University Name, #'s 37–42 on the Approved Logo Sheet, and the George Mascot (Tertiary Athletics) Mark, #'s 43–48 on the Approved Logo Sheet, require approval for usage from the Licensing and Trademarks Program.

Guidelines for Varsity Athletics Coaches:

The GW Athletics Graphic Identity Manual for Merchandise (PDF) presents guidelines for the approved representation of George Washington Athletics, a critical component of the overall brand and identity program for GW. It introduces key elements—official colors, typography and more—for marks such as the GW Primary Athletics, Secondary Athletics, Motion George Washington and George Mascot.

These guidelines apply to GW varsity athletic coaches and student athletes:

  • The Primary Athletics Marks, as indicated on the Approved Logo Sheet #'s 25-30, must be used as a primary logo on all uniforms, team practice gear and equipment.

  • The Secondary Athletics Marks, as indicated on the Approved Logo Sheet #'s 31-36, can only be used as a secondary mark on uniforms and equipment.

  • The Tertiary Athletics Mark with University Name and the George Mascot (Tertiary Athletics) Mark, as indicated on the Approved Logo Sheet as #'s 37–48, must receive prior approval to use from the Licensing and Trademarks Program.

  • The George Mascot (Tertiary Athletics) Mark, #'s 43-48 on the Approved Logo Sheet, must also be accompanied by the Primary Athletics Mark or approved verbiage.

  • A Registration mark ® must appear at the lower right area of the logo or trademark on all team practice gear, merchandise and equipment. It does not have to appear on uniforms.

  • Preferred font types are Liberator, United and Knockout.

  • The approved PMS colors for the Primary Athletics Mark, Secondary Athletics Mark and Tertiary Athletics Mark with University Name are BLUE 282 and BUFF 7502.

  • The approved PMS colors for the George Mascot (Tertiary Athletics) Mark are DARK BLUE 282, LIGHT BLUE 282-15%, BUFF 7502, BUFF HIGHLIGHT 7502- 20% and COMPLEXION 726.
